“As a survivor of childhood trauma, the last thing I’ve ever wanted is a massage. But that’s exactly what I got for Christmas. A normal situation would allow me to say thank you and re-gift it. But “normal” isn’t a thing and these generous gift-givers would know if I did that. So, I found myself booked for a signature massage with hot stones. In my haste to book an appointment before losing my nerve, I completely forgot that massage therapists come in a variety of genders and I was assigned the worst possible option: a male. I could see my Jeep parked in the street through the beautiful glass front door, and I nearly bolted. I’m not sure what stopped me. Therapist Lucas acted like it was perfectly normal for a fully-dressed, middle-aged woman covered in scars to book a signature massage and request to only be touched from the elbows to wrists and knees to ankles. Bless him! He didn’t expect me to talk (bless him again!). And, while I was filled with anxiety, it was a peaceful experience. And I’m grateful I had the opportunity to experience human touch that didn’t hurt. To the generous gift-givers of a free massage: THANK YOU!
